The 1958 classic Karigar delves into the complex themes of class division, societal prejudices, love, and redemption. The movie follows the story of an impoverished artist, Shankar (Ashok Kumar), who lives with his sister, Shanti (Nirupa Roy), in a lower-class neighborhood. Shankar's passion for painting is constantly challenged by the harsh realities of life, as he struggles to make a living and provide for his family. Despite his talent, Shankar's artwork remains unrecognized and undervalued by the wealthy and elite of society.

One day, while working on a painting in a public park, Shankar crosses paths with a wealthy businessman, Chhaganlal (Om Prakash). Intrigued by Shankar's art, Chhaganlal offers to commission a painting from him, but on the condition that he disguises himself as a wealthy artist to fit in with high society. Despite his initial reluctance, Shankar agrees to the deal, seeing it as an opportunity to achieve financial stability and make his mark in the art world.

As Shankar rises in popularity amongst the elite, he realizes that his success comes with a social stigma. He is ostracized by his old neighbors and criticized for trying to fit in with the wealthy. The only person who remains loyal to him is his sister, Shanti, who supports him through thick and thin.

As Shankar is consumed by his newfound fame and success, he meets and falls in love with a wealthy socialite, Meena (Nimmi). Meena is drawn to Shankar's talent and sincerity but is unaware of his true identity. Soon after, Shankar's secret is uncovered, and he is ridiculed and shamed by the same society that once praised him.

The rest of the film follows Shankar's journey as he confronts his innermost fears and insecurities. He learns that one's true worth is not determined by their social standing, but by their talent and hard work. Along the way, Shankar reunites with his loved ones and regains their respect and admiration.

One of the standout aspects of the movie is the performances by the lead actors. Ashok Kumar portrays Shankar with a depth and complexity that is both captivating and relatable. Nirupa Roy delivers an emotional performance as Shankar's caring sister, Shanti. Om Prakash, as the scheming businessman, Chhaganlal, adds a layer of complexity to the story with his nuanced portrayal of a man caught up in his own selfish desires.

The film's soundtrack, composed by Salil Chowdhury, is a delight to the ears, with its blend of Indian classical and western music. The songs, especially "Tumhi Ho Mehboob Mere," have become classics in the Indian film industry.

Overall, Karigar is a timeless masterpiece that explores timeless themes that are still relevant today. Its message about the importance of staying true to oneself and fighting against societal norms and expectations is one that resonates deeply with audiences even today.
