Kill the Poor is a social drama set in New York's Alphabet City during the mid-1980s. It is based on the novel of the same name by Joel Rose, and titled in turn after the Dead Kennedys song. Carlos and Segundo are father and son, who live in a rundown apartment block. After a fire devestates their home, an investigation forms to find out whose fault the fire is. The diverse and eclectic sampling of tenants get together and decide that Carlos and Segundo are to blame, and begin a campaign to force their eviction. The gritty, tough life on the streets filled with drug-dealing and crime is also in focus.
