"Everything in this world has its price."
In the 17th century, Krabat, a young orphan boy, becomes the apprentice of a miller. Slowly, he realizes that the master is actually a sorcerer, who teaches the black arts to his apprentices. This is appealing at first but has a steep price: the life of one apprentice each year! There is only one way to escape this fate: Krabat's love has to recognize him, although he and all apprentices have been transformed.
