The Prophecy is a 1995 supernatural thriller film directed by Gregory Widen and starring an ensemble cast including Christopher Walken, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen, and Eric Stoltz. The movie revolves around the battle between the archangels and their fallen counterparts over human souls, with Walken playing the lead role of the archangel Gabriel.

The story is set in contemporary time, in a world where angels and demons walk among humans unnoticed. The film opens with two angels, Simon (Eric Stoltz) and Uziel (Matt Schulze), stealing a divine book from the bowels of heaven. This book contains the names of all the souls who will be granted entry into heaven on the day of reckoning.

We are then introduced to Thomas Daggett (Elias Koteas), a former police officer turned Catholic teacher who had a supernatural vision of a war between angels during his early years at seminary school. In his vision, he saw an angel throw down a fiery sword and quit his position in heaven to start his mission on Earth. This fiery angel who fell from grace was none other than Gabriel (Christopher Walken).

Years later, Thomas left the seminary and became a detective, disheartened by the loss of his faith. However, after witnessing a senseless suicide and another murder, both with cryptic religious messages, he is called upon by his former priest to investigate.

The investigation leads Thomas down a rabbit hole of supernatural events, all pointing to the presence of Gabriel on the Earth. He eventually meets a nurse named Katherine (Virginia Madsen), who holds a vital piece of information that could prove pivotal in the battle between good and evil.

The film's pace picks up as the narrative shifts back and forth between Gabriel's attempts to retrieve the stolen book and Thomas and Katherine's frantic search for a way to prevent it from falling into his hands.

Christopher Walken delivers an outstanding performance as Gabriel, the once loyal archangel, now on a mission to start a war between heaven and hell. He is charismatic, ethereal, and terrifying, all at once. Elias Koteas matches him as Thomas, the detective-turned-teacher, struggling to come to terms with the existence of angels and demons.

Virginia Madsen as Katherine doesn't have much of a backstory, but she does play the role of the damsel in distress to a degree. She comes across as resourceful and strong, but her character is never fleshed out fully.

The Prophecy is a well-crafted supernatural thriller that takes an interesting spin on the age-old battle between good and evil. It manages to balance action, suspense, and drama, with a bit of humor thrown in for good measure.

The movie is also notable for its use of practical effects and makeup, which adds to the overall aesthetic of the film. The cinematography is dark and moody, and the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful.

The film's climax is intense and satisfying, leaving audiences wondering about the fate of both the main characters and the world they inhabit. Without giving too much away, it's worth noting that the movie's ending is left open for sequels, which did eventually happen in the form of three somewhat lackluster follow-up movies.

Overall, The Prophecy is an underappreciated gem of a movie that deserves a wider audience. It has aged well and is still an enjoyable watch today, thanks in large part to the outstanding performances of the cast and its clever plot. It's a movie that fans of both supernatural thrillers and action movies are sure to enjoy.

The Prophecy is a 1995 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 44.
