Hellboy is a 2019 American superhero horror film directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbour in the title role. The present-day Hellboy is constantly haunted by his own origins and has a complicated relationship with his adoptive father, Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane), who is the founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). The Hellboy we see in this movie is younger and more volatile than the previous version, and his uncontrolled temper and love of chaos put him at odds with the people who care about him.

In the midst of this, the BPRD is tasked with investigating a series of gruesome attacks by giants who are suddenly attacking England. Hellboy is sent to England to help, but instead finds himself face to face with a resurrected Nimue (Milla Jovovich). Together with the witch Ganeida (Emma Tate), Nimue is attempting to raise the apocalypse and Hellboy is the only one who can stop her.

The film is fast-paced and action-packed, taking its cues from the comic books it is based on. David Harbour does an excellent job portraying the complex and sometimes unlikeable Hellboy, who is often at odds with his own nature. We see his development throughout the film as he grapples with his own identity and the choices he has made, as well as the consequences of those choices.

Ian McShane is perfect as the gruff yet loving Bruttenholm, who cares for Hellboy even as he struggles to keep him under control. Milla Jovovich is fierce and compelling as Nimue, who is bent on revenge against those who wronged her centuries ago.

The film is full of epic battles, showcasing Hellboy's immense strength and power. There are also plenty of moments of humor and levity, with Hellboy's snarky and sarcastic humor serving as a counterbalance to the doom and gloom of the ultraviolence.

The visual effects are stunning, with the creatures and otherworldly beings looking truly otherworldly. The atmosphere is moody and foreboding, evoking the horror elements of the comic books.
