The main character of the film, Alfred Kiekeritz - a young Austro- Hungarian lieutenant is moved to the back of the front due to an advanced stadium of tuberculosis. He holds a post of a commander at an assembly point in a Galician town Turka. He lives in a seedy, Jewish hotel and is the only guest there. He does not feel well.
