Neengal Kettavai, released in 1984, is a Tamil-language film directed by Balu Mahendra. The film features Archana, Bhanuchander, and Jaishankar in the lead roles. The plot revolves around a young woman who is forced to marry a man against her wishes and the consequences of that decision. The movie begins with a young woman named Uma (Archana) who lives with her mother in a small village. Uma is a strong-willed and independent-minded woman who dreams of pursuing higher education and working outside the village. However, Uma's mother is traditional and wants her daughter to get married and settle down as soon as possible.

Despite her reluctance, Uma is forced to marry an older man named Gopi (Jaishankar), who is a widower with two children. Gopi is a kind-hearted man who genuinely cares for Uma and tries to make her feel comfortable in his home. However, Uma is unable to adjust to her new life and feels suffocated and lonely.

Adding to her woes, Uma discovers that her husband is an alcoholic who spends most of his time drinking with his friends instead of taking care of his family. Gopi's friends also make frequent visits to their home and harass Uma when Gopi is not around. Uma's life becomes a living hell, and she yearns for an escape.

One day, Gopi's friend's nephew, Chandra (Bhanuchander), comes to visit them. Chandra is a city-dweller who works as a DJ in a club. He is attracted to Uma and tries to befriend her. Uma is initially hesitant, but she soon finds solace in Chandra's company. Chandra supports and encourages Uma to pursue her dreams and works towards becoming financially independent.

Uma starts working as a teacher in a nearby school, and her husband is unhappy with her decision. Gopi feels that Uma should focus on taking care of the house and their children, and not venture outside. This leads to many conflicts between the couple, and Uma feels that she has no choice but to leave her husband.

Uma's decision to leave Gopi and her family causes an uproar in the village. Her mother and the villagers believe that Uma has brought shame to her family, and her actions are not acceptable in their society. Uma, however, is determined to live life on her own terms and stands up for herself.

The movie showcases the struggles of a young woman who fights against the societal norms to pursue her dreams. Neengal Kettavai has several notable performances, with Archana delivering a powerful performance as Uma. Bhanuchander's portrayal of Chandra is also noteworthy, and he brings a freshness to the movie with his character.

Balu Mahendra's direction is commendable, and he effectively captures the emotions and struggles of the characters. The music by Ilaiyaraaja is soulful and goes well with the movie's overall tone. The lyrics by Vairamuthu are meaningful and add depth to the film.

Overall, Neengal Kettavai is a must-watch movie that highlights the challenges faced by women in our society. The movie has a strong message of empowerment and encourages women to stand up for themselves and pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
