Neither Wolf Nor Dog is a 2016 independent drama film directed by Steven Lewis Simpson, based on the 1994 novel of the same name written by Kent Nerburn. The film follows the story of Kent Nerburn, a white author who is approached by an elderly Native American man named Dan (Dave Bald Eagle) to write a book about his life experiences. Initially hesitant, Nerburn eventually agrees to Dan's request and agrees to travel with him to his home on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Once there, Nerburn meets Grover (Christopher Sweeney), Dan's Lakota friend who helps him in his writing. Grover serves as a translator and teaches Nerburn about the Lakota culture, history, and customs. Together they embark on an eye-opening journey, visiting sacred sites and learning about the issues faced by the Native American community.

Throughout the film, Dan shares his life experiences and insights with Nerburn, allowing him to gain a deeper understanding of the Native American way of life. Dan's stories range from his childhood memories to his experiences as a World War II veteran to his struggles with the loss of his family members and the difficulties he faces as an elder in modern society.

As the journey continues, Nerburn begins to question his own beliefs and assumptions about the world. He realizes that his narrow-mindedness and ignorance blinded him to the rich culture and history of the Native American people. He learns that in order to truly understand and empathize with others, he must first shed his preconceived notions and listen with an open heart and mind.

The film explores themes of cultural identity, respect, and compassion. It highlights the importance of recognizing and preserving diverse cultures and traditions, and the dangers of cultural appropriation and exploitation. It also sheds light on the ongoing struggles and injustices faced by the Native American people, including poverty, lack of healthcare, and the destruction of sacred lands.

The acting in the film is raw and authentic, with Dave Bald Eagle delivering a powerful performance as Dan. His calm and wise demeanor invites the audience to listen to his words and ponder their own beliefs. Christopher Sweeney and Richard Ray Whitman also shine in their respective roles, adding depth and humor to the film.

Neither Wolf Nor Dog is a poignant and thought-provoking film that encourages viewers to see beyond their own cultural bubble and seek a deeper understanding and appreciation for others. It serves as a reminder that we all have much to learn from each other, and the power of listening and empathy can bridge even the deepest divides.
