No Place to Hide is a 1992 made-for-television drama film directed by Richard Danus and starring Kris Kristofferson, Drew Barrymore, Martin Landau, and Illana Diamant. The film tells the story of marine life activist Mariel Hemingway, who uncovers corporate pollution and illegal fishing practices in the protected waters of a Costa Rican reef, and the unexpected consequences and dangers she faces while trying to expose the truth.
The film starts with Mariel Hemingway as Jo Ann Vallenari, a marine biologist who has dedicated her life to the study and conservation of marine life. She is working on a project in the waters of Costa Rica with her colleague, Ben (Drew Barrymore), when they discover that a ship may be illegally fishing in the area. After investigating and confirming their suspicions, they try to report the illegal activity to the authorities, but they receive no support due to a lack of evidence.
Jo Ann revisits the site of the illegal fishing and discovers hidden underwater cameras installed by the fisherman. She decides to collect and present the images to the authorities to implicate the fisherman. In the meantime, she meets Jack (Kris Kristofferson), an American expatriate who lives in Costa Rica and is taking care of a sick dolphin. Jack is a free-spirited character who speaks his mind and is skeptical of big corporations.
Despite Jack's warnings, Jo Ann shares the images of the undercover cameras with a journalist, only to have the journalist disappear after receiving them. Jo Ann then goes to the local newspaper, where she meets Frank (Martin Landau), the editor-in-chief. Initially, Frank is reluctant to run the story because of the newspaper's close ties to the fishing industry that is behind the illegal activity. However, he eventually decides to run the story with the help of a private investigator.
As the story gains traction and attention from the media, Jo Ann becomes the target of the fishing industry's attempts to discredit her and silence her investigation. She receives death threats and is physically attacked by unknown assailants. Meanwhile, Jack is also targeted and is almost killed while trying to protect Jo Ann. Jo Ann becomes aware of her vulnerability and the dangers of exposing the truth, as she realizes that she has No Place to Hide.
The film is a compelling drama that explores the lengths to which corporations go to protect their interests, even if it means compromising the environment and those trying to protect it. The film raises important questions about the price of speaking out against powerful corporations and the role of the media in exposing such practices. The film also highlights the need to protect our oceans and their fragile ecosystems, and the importance of responsible fishing practices.
Overall, No Place to Hide is an engaging and thought-provoking film that tackles relevant social and environmental issues that are still very relevant today. With its strong cast, compelling story, and beautiful cinematography, it is a film that is sure to captivate viewers and leave them reflecting on the impact of our actions on the planet.
