This movie from India was filmed in a language widely used in southwestern India and the Kerala area. Reportedly loosely based on two short stories by the writer C. V. Sreeraman, it earned awards for Mammootty, the actor who played Ponthan Mada, and also for its musical score. The drama occurs in rural India many decades ago. In agricultural areas, people then widely practiced restrictive Hindu caste customs. The story centers upon efforts to communicate between a low caste peasant (played by Mammootty) and his upper caste landlord. They were not allowed to speak with one another through caste rules.
