The film is based on the novel written by Ravi Sabnis. The film opens with the introduction of Rama, the prince of Ayodhya, and his wife Sita. They are loved and respected by all who know them, and their affection for each other is enviable. However, Rama's stepmother Kaikeyi, with the help of her manipulative maid, Manthara, convinces King Dasharatha to send Rama to exile for 14 years so that her own son Bharat can become king.

Rama accepts his fate and leaves for the forest with Sita and brother Lakshman. The three of them soon encounter various challenges, including demons and evil spirits. They are aided by the wise and knowledgeable sage Valmiki, who guides them on their journey. Meanwhile, Bharat, who is unaware of his mother's machinations, is torn between his duties as a son and his love for his brother.

The film then shifts to the political scenario in Lanka, ruled by the demon king Ravana. He is arrogant and believes that no one can defeat him. The second half of the film focuses on the efforts of Rama, Lakshman, and the brave warrior Hanuman to rescue Sita from Ravana's clutches. They battle demons and face many challenges, ultimately succeeding in rescuing Sita and slaying Ravana.

The film ends with Rama, Sita, and Lakshman returning to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Bharat reunites with his elder brother and apologizes for his mother's actions.
