Red Sonja is a movie released as a spin off from the more popular Conan the Barbarian series of movies based on the popular Marvel Comics characters. Produced by the Dino De Laurentiis Company, Red Sonja was a co-production financed by companies in the Ntherlands and U.S. designed to cash in on the Conan character played in two earlier films by Arnold Schwarzenegger; although Conan does not appear by name, the character of Kalidor played by Schwarzenegger is a thinly disguised version of Conan. The Richard Fleischer directed movie was not a commercial success as it came at the end of popularity for the sword-and-sorcery movies that were successful in the late 70s and early 1980s. The movie begins with a series of flashbacks explaining how Red Sonja, played by Danish model and actress Brigitte Nielsen, was the subject of romantic advances of Queen Gedren, which she rejects. Angered by the rejection, Queen Gedren murders Red Sonja's brother and parents, but Sonja escapes and becomes a fearsome warrior. A religious group of priestesses charged with defending the world is then depicted holding a ritual designed to destroy a talisman with the power to destroy the world; Queen Gedren's army then enters the temple and slaughters the priestesses before taking the talisman to the Queen. Red Sonja's sister, Varna, is a priestess and tracks down her sister with the help of Lord Kalidor and tells her of the Queen's actions. Leaving her sister behind, Red Sonja makes her way to the Queen's palace with the help of Kalidor. Finally entering the palace, Red Sonja makes her way to Queen Gedren's chambers, where she is using the talisman to wreak havoc on the world with a series of storms. Sonja and Gedren engage in battle as the talisman blows a hole in the palace revealing molten lava. Finally defeating Gedren, Red Sonja throws the Queen and the talisman into the lava to destroy them both.
