Jackie is a fiction editor at the New Yorker who has a difficult relationship with her son, Angelo. Angelo, a fledgling writer, decides to drop out of college and live with his father on the West Coast where he’ll focus on surfing. Jackie flies to Los Angeles to check on her son. He ends up telling her that she could never understand him or surfing. Taking this as a challenge, Jackie decides to learn how to surf. Her struggles to learn to paddle, stand, and wipe out batter her ego and she learns not only how to surf but how to relate to her son in a new way.
