Safe Men is a crime comedy movie released in 1998 that stars Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, and Michael Lerner. It tells the story of two amateur singers, Sam and Eddie, who are mistaken for safe-crackers by a local Jewish gangster named Big Fat Bernie Gayle. Sam and Eddie are struggling to make ends meet as singers, and they believe their big break has finally arrived when they land a gig at a local bar in Rhode Island. Unfortunately, their performance turns out to be a fiasco, and they are booed off stage. In their desperation to make a living, they decide to try and rob a pawnshop in the hopes of making some quick cash. However, things take a turn for the worse when they are spotted by one of the pawnshop employees. The employee assumes they are safe-crackers and reports them to the police. Police officers show up at their small apartment building and threaten to arrest them unless they lead them to the loot they allegedly stole. During their interrogation, they happen to mention Big Fat Bernie Gayle and his safe-cracking operation. The officers inform them that Bernie is the most feared Jewish gangster in the area, and it's not wise to mess with him. Not knowing what to do, Sam and Eddie decide to approach Bernie in the hopes of clearing things up. However, Bernie mistakes them for two experienced safe-crackers and offers them a job to rob a rival gangster's safe. He promises them a substantial payout if they succeed. Excited by the prospect of earning a quick buck, they accept the job, not realizing the danger they have put themselves in. They soon find themselves embroiled in a web of lies, deceit, and violence, as they try to pull off the job while keeping their real identities hidden. As they work on the heist, they are pursued by a bumbling private investigator, a crooked cop, and an angry rival gangster. Their luck seems to be running out, and the pressure begins to mount. The suspenseful action and witty dialogue make for a highly entertaining movie. Sam Rockwell and Steve Zahn deliver outstanding performances as the two hapless protagonists. Their chemistry is excellent, and their comedic timing is spot-on. Michael Lerner, who plays the role of Big Fat Bernie Gayle, also delivers a standout performance, bringing an air of menace and humor to the story. The movie also features a fantastic soundtrack, with songs from the 50s and 60s that add to the overall feel of the movie.
