Caleb is a farmer who has obsessed about a homicidal scarecrow ever since it slew his father ages ago, capturing the creature and sealed it off. When two guys raid Caleb's farm for a frat initiation, Caleb spots them and shoots the scarecrow without realizing that one of the boys was beneath it. The gunshot kills the boy, name Dave, and transfers his soul into the scarecrow's body, awakening Dave as a new creature. Dave seeks out his old girlfriend in order to make her a scarecrow like himself and is willing to kill anyone who gets in his way.
