- 1 hr 48 min
School of Rock is about a rock singer who is unexpectedly fired from his band for being too arrogant and hyperactive. Faced with the prospect of being unemployed and broke, Dewey Finn steals a substitute teaching job from his roommate and friend Ned Schneebly. Dewey finds out that he is teaching a class of fifth graders at a prestigious prep school. Dewey has never been a substitute teacher and has no interest in teaching the appropriate lesson plan to the kids. Instead, he chooses to teach them the thing he knows best: rock music. At first, the kids are reluctant to listen to Dewey and they treat him with contempt. Dewey remains steadfast in his enthusiasm for teaching music, and decides to train the class in the ways of rock and roll. As the teaching year progresses, Dewey realizes that the kids have a real talent for playing rock music and believes he can front them in a lucrative Battle of the Bands competition. During the preparation for the competition, Dewey learns more about each of the kids in the class and grows closer to them. Dewey's ruse is nearly exposed when the school's principal begins to see positive changes in the students in the class. Principal Mullins asks to sit in on one of Dewey's classes, which forces him to change his teaching strategy. Following that close call, Dewey decides to appeal to Mrs. Mullins' inner rock and roll star, convincing her to allow him to take a field trip with the kids. Dewey's intent is to take them to the competition. Ultimately, Ned discovers what Dewey has done, and confronts him. Dewey is then fired from the school and struggles with depression. The day of the competition, the kids make the decision to participate as a rock band, believing that they should get some reward for the effort they have put into their performance. On their way to the show, the kids convince Dewey to join them. School of Rock emphasizes the strong bonds created between teacher and student and between those that love rock music. When faced with setbacks, the inspiring message that the movie sends is to keep trying your best and good things will happen. Dewey's passion for music and life is relayed to the students, which is one of the greatest lessons one can teach young people.
