The storyline is set in Dengfeng, Henan in a time where a warlord rules the plains of China. A warlord named Hou Jie overpowers his adversary, Huo Long, and proclaims Dengfeng as his property. The defeated warlord escapes to a nearby Shaolin temple to seek refuge. The pursuers are blocked by Shaolin monks who refuse bloodshed and violence inside their temple. Hou approaches the temple with his armed men.

Unbiased and willing to help anyone who asks for it, the monks form an attack formation around Huo, so that he does not get shot and killed. Huo negotiates with Hou to let him live in exchange for a treasure map. Yet after receiving the map, Hou shoots his fallen foe at the back, killing him instantly. Before departing, Hou further humiliates the monks by adding an inscription on the temple's signboard.

During the celebratory parade, Hou meets with his sworn brother, Song Hu. Feeling that he has been used by Song Hu for his own personal gains, Hou devises a trap in a restaurant. He instructs his second in command, Cao Man, to make all the necessary arrangements. However, Cao Man feels that he is also used for his captain's benefits. Rather than sticking to the plan, he decides to create a plan of his own to dispose both warlords by hiring a group of mercenaries.

On the actual night of the meeting, Hou and Song Hu arrive together with their families including Hou's daughter, whom Song Hu proposes to marry his son. As the dinner continues, Hou signals his family to vacate the premises as the trap supposedly unfolds. But before the plan could be executed, a messenger for Song Hu arrives and hands him a letter. It turns out the Hou's plan was intercepted. During the heated argument, Hou shoots his sworn brother and fatally wounds him, after which the hired assassins by Cao Man arrive.
