Somnus is a science-fiction thriller directed by Chris Reading and released in 2017. The story revolves around a spaceship named the Necronomicon carrying a crew of five people through the vastness of space. The ship is on a mission to transport precious cargo from Earth to a distant mining colony. The crew is in cryogenic stasis, suspended in a state of sleep. The ship's AI system is the only thing moving the ship forward.

The film begins with the ship's AI waking up the captain – a man named Brett, played by Rohit Gokani. Brett is awoken from cryogenic stasis because the ship has reached the end of its journey – it has arrived at the mining colony. When Brett wakes up, he receives a video message from the mining colony in which an alien artifact has been discovered. The artifact is said to have mysterious powers which could help humanity progress in unimaginable ways. The message asks Brett to transport the artifact back to Earth.

As soon as the artifact is brought aboard the Necronomicon, strange things start to happen. The crew members report vivid nightmares, hallucinations and strange occurrences. As the journey back to Earth continues, the crew begin to experience strange events which become more and more sinister. Brett tries to maintain control of the ship, but it seems to have a life of its own as it moves towards its final destination.

Guided by the ship’s AI, the crew is jolted awake from cryogenic stasis when a series of power outages force them to take manual control. The AI reveals that it has detected an alien force on board and advises the crew to prepare for an attack. The alien intruder manifests itself as a malevolent entity that hunts down the crew one by one. The crew is trapped in a race against time to get to Earth and warn humanity of the alien threat that is now aboard the ship.

The plot of the movie is a perfect blend of science-fiction and psychological thriller. The special effects are great, and the movie is visually pleasing. The film takes full advantage of the claustrophobic feeling of being trapped in space with an unknown entity that is unrelenting in its pursuit of the crew.

The acting in the movie is exceptional, especially by Rohit Gokani and Victoria Oliver who play the captain and the doctor aboard the ship respectively. Their stellar performances elevate the movie.

The background score is an atmospheric and suspenseful blend of electronic music that enhances the feeling of unease and tension created by the movie's plot. The music heightens the sense of urgency and foreboding.

Despite its modest budget, Somnus manages to create an immersive sci-fi experience that is genuinely frightening. The film's horror elements are not overdone, and the tension built up by the plot makes for a great horror experience. The story is intelligently written, and the characters are well-developed, which is rare in many sci-fi horror movies.

In conclusion, Somnus is a must-watch for fans of the sci-fi and horror genres. The movie has an intelligent plot, great acting, atmospheric music, and stunning visuals. The movie is a well-crafted and terrifying experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. If you're looking for a psychological thriller set in a sci-fi setting, Somnus should not be missed.
