In the 1954 movie Target Earth, a group of people in Chicago wakes up to a deserted city. They soon learn that there has been an evacuation due to an invasion by an alien race from Venus. The group consists of reporter Dick (Richard Denning), a woman named Nora (Kathleen Crowley), the wealthy Bonnie (Virginia Grey), a taxi driver named Danny (Robert Roark), and five-year-old Timmy (Richard Reeves). The group bands together to survive and figure out how to stop the invasion.

The movie begins with a mysterious spacecraft hovering over Chicago. The next morning, Dick wakes up to find the city completely deserted. As he begins to try and find out what's going on, he meets Nora, who has been left behind due to a broken leg. They soon come across Bonnie, who is holed up in a hotel room with a small arsenal of weapons. She tells them that the aliens have been trying to break in for hours. They decide to help her fortify the room and wait for help.

As they wait, they begin to see more and more signs of the alien invasion. They see the strange creatures that the aliens have left behind to control the city. These robots are eerie, with glowing red eyes and a single claw-like arm. They move slowly but relentlessly, never stopping until their target is captured. One of the robots gets into the hotel room and Bonnie is killed trying to defend them. The remaining trio decide they need to leave and try to find an escape route.

As they move through the city, they come across things that make them question what's going on. They see a newspaper stand with papers from the day after they woke up, suggesting that the invasion has been going on for longer than they thought. They also hear strange music coming from a department store. When they investigate, they find Timmy, a little boy who has been left behind by his family. They take him along with them and continue to try and find a way out of the city.

Along the way, they encounter more of the robots and try to find ways to evade them. They come across an abandoned police car and manage to get the radio working. They make contact with a group of soldiers who are fighting the aliens and get valuable information about how to stop them. They also learn that the aliens have set up a force field around the city that is making it impossible for anyone to leave.

As the group continues to navigate the city, they come up with a plan to try and stop the aliens. They decide to travel to the top of the tallest building in the city and set off a flare. This will signal the soldiers outside the city that it's safe to enter. They make their way to the top of the building, evading the robots and facing numerous setbacks. When they finally set off the flare, they are attacked by the aliens themselves. The soldiers outside the city are able to use the distraction to make their way into the city and start fighting the aliens.
