After the mysterious death of a young boy believed to be linked to an apparent haunting, renowned paranormal research specialist and writer, Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall), agrees to investigate the reported haunting. Though skeptical of any true paranormal activity she agrees to take the case and arrives with the intent of proving there is a logical explanation for everything, though what she experiences is truly eye-opening.

Florence arrives at the all-boys school and quickly begins investigating the alleged sightings. Setting up cameras and gauges to track and document any staged paranormal activity. During interviews with the students she begins piecing together the events that led up to the death of Walter, a pupil at the school, rationalizing that his death resulted from an asthmatic attack after a scare.

Though finished but still unsatisfied with the results of the investigation, Florence stays on in order to discover what is really happening at the school. With facts, logic, and science beginning to fail her, she begins to unravel as she struggles with the ability to comprehend the events going on around her, faced with the idea that this time, there may not be a scientific explanation.
