The Barbarians is a heroic fantasy film produced by Yoram Globus, Menahem Golan and John Thompson and written by Alberto Piferi and James R. Silke. The film stars David and Peter Paul as the twin Barbarian Brothers. The story of The Barbarians takes place in a fantasy setting reminiscent of medieval times, where orphaned Barbarian brothers Kutchek and Gore live with a clan of entertainers called the Ragnicks, who are ruled by their queen, Canary, played by Virginia Bryant. One day, a sinister dictator named Kadar, played by Richard Lynch, attacks the travelers in hopes of stealing Canary’s enchanted ruby, which will help him become stronger. Unable to find the jewel, Kadar captures Canary and the young Barbarian brothers. At his fortress, Kadar keeps Canary confined and orders Kutchek and Gore into slavery while the other entertainers are banished to live in the forests. Over the years, the two brothers train and grow into powerful warriors. When they reach adulthood, Kadar masks the men and arranges for them to enter into battle against each other without their knowledge. In the midst of their vicious fight, Gore and Kutchek come to realize that they are fighting each other, and witness Kadar holding Canary captive. The men manage to flee the castle and encounter the Ragnicks in the forest. Initially, the entertainers do not recognize their former tribe mates and threaten to kill them. But when the brothers explain their history with the Ragnicks, they are freed. Angry and eager for retribution, Kutchek and Gore plot their revenge attack on Kadar. The Barbarians was released in March 1987 and runs for 87 minutes. The film was directed by Ruggero Deodato and distributed by Cannon Films in the United States and Italy.
