This impressive documentary produced and directed by Mark Radice and narrated by Fergal Keane describes the First World War from an overhead perspective, using archived footage taken by cameramen aboard an airship in 1919, plus recently uncovered aerial photographs of battlefield scenes shot from airplanes. The film documents vividly how significantly the global conflict transformed the rural landscape of Europe. A series of tunnels and earthworks forever altered the appearance of many parts of the continent, as both sides relied extensively on trench warfare to protect their troops and supply lines and to try retaining control over strategic land formations.
