On August 22, 1911 Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece Mona Lisa was stolen right off the wall of the Louvre. There were no witnesses and the perpetrator didn't leave any traces except a clear fingerprint, which later led to the capture of the thief. A police officer, William Herschel, was the first to draw attention to the uniqueness of papillary pattern on human fingers and palms.
