Back in the day science was not as deeply rooted in criminalistics as it is today. Scientists were called upon by investigators only if the latter thought it necessary, scientists had no legal authority. An Austrian criminal jurist, Hans Gross, reshaped the playing field. He integrated science into criminal investigations thus giving birth to criminalistics.
