This 80s drama film was directed by Kon Ichikawa and is based upon the popular historical novels of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki. The film, like the books, follows the lives of the titular Makioka Sisters, who live in Japan during the Shōwa era. They lead isolated lives of formality and solitude in their family manor. The film was exceedinly well recieved by both critics and audiences alike and praised for many of it's aspects, such as the acting, historical recreation, set design and script. The overripe synth music and sometimes over elaborate settings were the only points that were almost unanimously critiqued.
