The Monster Project is a 2017 horror film that follows a group of young documentary filmmakers as they set out to create a web series about real-life monsters. Their goal is to interview people who claim to be monsters, in order to gain insight into their mysterious lives. The team of filmmakers consists of Alex (played by Toby Hemingway), Devon (played by Justin Bruening), and Murielle (played by Murielle Zuker). They enlist the help of a Craigslist ad to find people who claim to be monsters, and they manage to find three individuals who fit the bill - a vampire, a demon, and a skinwalker.
As the filmmakers begin to interview their so-called monsters, things quickly start to go off the rails. It becomes clear that these individuals may not just be eccentric people who like to dress up - they might actually be dangerous, and their claims of being supernatural creatures might not be entirely false.
The vampire (played by Steven Flores) seems to relish in the idea of being interviewed and tells the filmmakers about his insatiable hunger for blood. The demon (played by Yvonne Zima) is far more sinister and seems to be actively trying to harm the filmmakers. The skinwalker (played by Jim Storm) is the most elusive of the three, and his true nature becomes more apparent as the film progresses.
As the night progresses, tensions rise between the filmmakers as they struggle to deal with the dangerous situations they've found themselves in. The vampire begins to attack one of the crew members, and the demon becomes more and more violent. The skinwalker, for his part, is far less forthcoming than the other two and seems to be hiding something.
The Monster Project does an excellent job of building suspense and creating a sense of dread. As the filmmakers become more and more afraid for their lives, the audience can't help but feel their fear. The tension is further amplified by the fact that the film is shot in a found footage style, which makes it feel more real and immediate.
The performances of the actors are also top-notch. Toby Hemingway does a great job of playing the level-headed leader of the group, while Justin Bruening brings some welcome humor to the role of Devon. Murielle Zuker is excellent as Murielle, who often serves as the voice of reason in the group.
The real standout performances, however, come from the actors playing the monsters. Steven Flores is particularly effective as the vampire, exuding a charming yet menacing presence. Yvonne Zima is equally impressive as the demon, playing the role with just the right amount of terrifying intensity. Jim Storm, though given less screen time than the other two, still manages to create a sense of unease with his portrayal of the skinwalker.
Overall, The Monster Project is an excellent horror film that manages to create a sense of genuine terror. The found footage style of filming works well, and the performances of the actors are top-notch. While the storyline may not be particularly groundbreaking, the film still manages to be a tense and enjoyable experience.
The Monster Project is a 2017 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 39 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.5.
