Don’t let the animation and feline connection fool you. The original movie “Fritz the Cat” in 1972 was the first animated feature to receive an X rating and was the most successful independent animated feature of all time. In the follow up “The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat” Fritz finds himself beyond the 1960s college scene from the first movie and now in the 1970s and married to a nagging wife, unemployed, and on welfare. To escape reality Fritz blazes up marijuana and drifts off into a world of what if. The film continues with its satirical approach to racial issues, politics, and of course sex. A little more toned down than its X rated predecessor, the film was rated R. Besides the X rating also missing from the first film is the comic strip artist who created Fritz (Robert Crumb), and the director of the first film (Ralph Baskshi).
