The Perfect Day, a 2016 Spanish film, is a heartwarming drama that takes place over the course of a single day. The movie follows a young man named Cristobal (Pedro Freijeiro) who is about to celebrate his 30th birthday. However, his day turns out to be far from perfect as he meets several people who each have a significant impact on his life.
The story begins with Cristobal waking up on his birthday morning to find that his girlfriend has left him. Devastated and alone, he decides to head to work where he works as a security guard at a storage unit complex. While on duty, he encounters an elderly woman named Carmen (Concha Hidalgo), who is there to retrieve something from her storage unit. Cristobal helps her and they strike up a conversation which reveals that Carmen is lonely and has been trying to visit her daughter who lives out of town.
As the day progresses, Cristobal has encounters with a number of people who all have their own stories and struggles. He meets another storage unit tenant, a musician named Tino (Pep McCoy), who has fallen on hard times and lost his passion for music. Cristobal also runs into his long estranged father, who abandoned him as a child, and has a chance to reconnect with him.
Later on, he meets Paula (Paula Sancho), a young woman who is returning a lost cell phone to its owner. During their conversation, he discovers that Paula is also struggling with her own problems and dreams of becoming a writer. Together, Cristobal and Paula set out to help Tino revive his love for music and overcome his fears. Along the way, they discover their own passions and dreams and realize that sometimes the most imperfect days can lead to the most perfect outcomes.
The Perfect Day is a simple but touching story that explores themes of human connection, self-discovery, and finding beauty in unexpected places. The film portrays some very relatable struggles of the human experience and shows how small moments of kindness and empathy can have a profound impact on people's lives. The screenplay by Ignacio Tatay and director Ignacio Redondo sets aside complex plots and characters for a beautifully simple story with characters you can care about.
The performances of the main cast are fantastic, particularly Freijeiro, who does a great job of making Cristobal relatable and sympathetic despite his flaws. He is the center of the story, and through his interactions with other characters, we see him grow and develop over the course of the day. Sancho also gives a solid performance as Paula, making her a charming and endearing character.
The cinematography is impressive, with stunning visuals of the city of Madrid during a beautiful sunny day. The film uses light and shadow perfectly to create a warm, friendly atmosphere that complements the simple yet profound story.
While the Perfect Day may not be groundbreaking in any way, it is an effective and poignant film that reminds us about the importance of human connections and kindness. It's a perfect film for those who enjoy heartwarming stories with characters they can relate to.
