The Saddest Music in the World is perhaps the greatest film by Canadian auteur Guy Madden. This 2003 film tells the story of a rich young woman who loses her leg tragically and spends her fortune scouring the world for the saddest music ever heard. In the process she finds and loses love. The story is set in the Great Depression and filmed using the techniques of the day, creating a marvelous pastiche of traditional imagery and modern sensibilities. Isabella Rossellini and Mark McKinney co-star. The film features Maddin's trademark kaleidoscopic style and wry, heartfelt storytelling in perhaps his most accessible work yet.
