The movie is set in the early 17th century and follows the journey of two Jesuit missionaries, Marko and Nikola, who are sent to a small village in Croatia in order to spread the word of God to the local people. The two missionaries soon find out that the village is a very unique place, and that the people living there have a very different way of life than what they are used to.
One of the unique things about the village is that it is surrounded by a dense forest, which the villagers believe is inhabited by evil spirits. They also believe that the spirits are responsible for all the bad things that happen in their lives.
