David is anointed to be king of Israel after the fall of King Saul (Anthony Quayle) who had fallen from grace with God and then fallen to a Philistine's blade. David also fell from God's grace, but because of a beautiful woman. David's modest beginnings are chronicled as the shepherd (Timothy Bottoms) who took on Goliath and won. His youth continued under God's graces and was wrought with benefits of being a loyal member of King Saul's court. Soon David was given the more honorable role of fighting along side Saul's Army against the Philistines. He proved to be a worthy soldier and continued to maintain his support and love for his king. Saul's children, Jonathan and Michal, both loved and respected the young David. This four-hour miniseries shows the skill and talents of actors like Timothy Bottoms as the young David who volunteers to fight the great Goliath, played by Tony Tarruella. The supporting cast is talented and capable of convincing portrayal of the Biblical characters. The life that is depicted also contains illicit romance. His most loyal soldier Uriah, played by Terrence Hardiman, had a beautiful wife who David coveted. David coerced Bathsheba (Jane Seymour) to be with him and she became pregnant. When David discovered this he brought Uriah back from battle and tried to get him to lay with his wife but Uriah refuses to enjoy his life while soldiers were in battle. David then sent message to the commander of his army to send Uriah into a battle with no support to die so he could have Bathsheba. This made for television movie attempts to hold true to the Bible story of David, his rise to the throne through doing God's work and follows his life from a shepherd, to a noble warrior to an adulterer that nearly loses Israel because of his lust for the wife of another man.
