The film consisted of seven self-contained segments, all connected by scenes of Donald Duck opening birthday presents. The titular three caballeros were Donald Duck, Jose Carioca and Panchito Pistoles. Jose was a Brazilian parrot and Panchito was a Mexican rooster. Much of the action was set in parts of Latin America and many of the human actors were Latinos.
