Stephen Colbert's writers talk about the daily process of turning news into comedy. This Paley Center live event, held in association with the New York Comedy Festival, honors the writers of "The Colbert Report," the faux conservative news satire hosted by Stephen Colbert, spun off from "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." Host David Bushman (television curator, the Paley Center) offers opening comments and introduces moderator Zachary Kanin (author; and cartoonist, the New Yorker).

Kanin moderates the following panelists, all writers on "The Colbert Report": head writer Barry Julien; and writers Peter Grosz, Max Werner, Peter Gwinn, Glenn Eichler, Jay Katsir, Rob Dubbin, Michael Brumm, Frank Lesser, Opus Moreschi, Meredith Scardino, and Eric Drysdale.

Panelists touch on such topics as: the daily process of turning news into comedy; if Colbert is "in character" before the show tapes; and if efforts are made to avoid redundancies between Jon Stewart's material on "The Daily Show" and Colbert's "Report."

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: if it's "scary" that some viewers use the show as their main source of news; and what happens when writers aren't feeling funny.
