This movie is a video production of a long standing play. It was written by Eve Ensler, a playwright, actress and political activist, who based it on interviews with more than 200 women in which she talked to them about their bodies, their sexuality, and how they experience simply being a woman. The play originally debuted as a limited edition one-woman show in 1996. Eve would read each of a series of monologues. In one way or another, each monologue relates back to the vagina and how women experience their lives and their sexuality. It developed a kind of grass roots success. It was later expanded to include different people performing each monologue. Each year, the monologues get updated and adapted. It is a body of work which is organic and still growing.

This film is the 2002 version of it starring its author Eve Ensler but supported by special interviews and behind-the-scenes commentary. It was recorded as an HBO special. It is exactly the kind of humorous, witty, intelligent, shocking presentation which made the reputation of early made-for-cable performances. It has the same mix of uplifting, thought-provoking yet not-quite-right for polite society bent which made HBO a household name.
