For many years, John Waters has been viewed as one of the premier filmmakers of the contemporary era, certainly in the gay community. He has always made movies that were viewed as too taboo for mainstream audiences, therefore gaining a massive cult following. His films often had the subject matter of gritty violence, gay humor, and a sexual energy that was shunned by most of Hollywood. It wasn't until his later years that he truly blossomed from an underground storyteller into a sort of cult icon that eventually gets him recognized in larger circles that once disrespected his body of work.
