Time Freak is a 2011 romantic-comedy film directed by Andrew Bowler, also co-writer of the movie alongside Gigi Causey. The film stars Michael Nathanson as a physics student named Stillman, who discovers a way to travel back in time. The movie unfolds with a paradoxical love story in which Stillman goes back in time to repair his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Debbie (Emilea Wilson), after he realizes that he ruined his relationship because he was obsessing over the time he spent with her. Debbie, however, has moved on and is now in a relationship with her boss, Evan (John Conor Brooke). The rest of the film follows their romantic entanglements through various timelines.

The film begins with Stillman struggling to come up with a compelling plan for his final physics project. With time running out and the pressure mounting, Stillman gets more and more frustrated until he finally discovers a way to build a time machine. However, his initial attempts to manipulate time don't go as planned, and he realizes the inherent risks and dangers of changing timelines. Eventually, he starts using his invention to fix his romantic past.

Despite the initial discomfort between the two characters, Stillman's persistence in pursuing Debbie finally yields some results as she starts to open up to him. He bounces around from different points in time, always trying to find the best way to repair their damaged relationship. However, in his eagerness to reconnect with Debbie, Stillman keeps making the same mistakes and ends up causing more harm than good. His time jumping quickly becomes problematic and his efforts to make things right inevitably lead to new problems, unexpected consequences, and awkward scenes that have audiences laughing even amidst the movie's atypical scenarios.

However, Stillman isn't the only one manipulating time. As he continues to travel back and forth, Evan also manages to get his hands on the time machine and starts using it to his advantage. The two men become engaged in a race of charm to see who can win Debbie's love, while at the same time threatening to dismantle the fabric of existence in the process. Their attempts to get one up on each other lead to several close calls and funny situations, and while both men learn valuable lessons, their newfound knowledge and maturity come at a great cost.

The story told through Time Freak is fresh, engaging, and fascinating. A blend of science, romance, and comedy is used to great effect, without feeling too niche, too dense or too artificial. Rather, the film strikes a perfect balance of humor and emotion which only gets more prominent as the story progresses. The audience is kept engaged and engrossed throughout its runtime of about 1 hour and 40 minutes, particularly in the dramatic moments when Stillman realizes the weight of his actions and Evan’s machinations prove quite devastating.

The filmmakers bring a unique point of view when it comes to time travel with practical effects and charm at its heart. The visual effects, though not over the top, are impressive enough to add authenticity to the sci-fi interludes; and the script manages to deliver an intelligent narrative that explores its premise in creative ways. Stillman’s journey takes him from sweet and sad to desperate and creepy, yet Always relevant and sensitive in his objectives. By the end of the movie, every character goes through a transformative experience but not without unveiling the irony of time travel.

In conclusion, Time Freak is a quirky, intelligent, and well-told story encapsulated in a science fiction motif but mainly focuses on relationships and redemption. The movie flies under the radar of the typical Hollywood formula and for that, acquires unique and independent traits that appeal to the audiences. The characters’ decisions are flawed, yet relatable, and that's what makes this film stand out amongst the sci-fi romantic-comedy genre. This feat alone makes Time Freak a gem of a movie and definitely worth a watch.
