Up From the Depths is a 1979 horror film directed by Charles B. Griffith and produced by Roger Corman. The movie is set on a tropical island where a group of tourists become the target of a prehistoric sea creature that was disturbed from its slumber by an earthquake. The film stars Sam Bottoms as James, the hero of the story, Susanne Reed as Barbara, the owner of the island resort, and Virgil Frye as Hank, the local captain.

The movie opens with a group of bikini-clad tourists arriving on an idyllic tropical island where Barbara's resort is located. They have come to enjoy the sun, the sand, and the sea, but unbeknownst to them, they are not alone. A prehistoric sea monster that was thought to be extinct has been awakened by an earthquake, and it has a taste for human flesh.

The first sign of trouble comes when a young couple, Bill and Nancy, go scuba diving and are attacked by the creature. When their boat returns to the shore with Bill's body ripped apart, the other tourists are in shock and panic ensues. The local authorities are called, but they dismiss the tourists' claims as a prank. However, James, an oceanographer who is also vacationing on the island, believes the tourists and sets out to find proof of the creature's existence.

James soon discovers that the creature is real and is responsible for a series of gruesome attacks on the tourists. He also learns that the creature is linked to the island's history of smuggling and the mysterious disappearance of a treasure-laden Spanish galleon that sank centuries ago. With the help of Barbara and Hank, James sets out to stop the creature before it can claim any more victims.

Up From the Depths is a classic B-movie that delivers on its promise of thrills and chills. The special effects might seem dated by today's standards, but they are still effective in creating a sense of terror and suspense. The underwater scenes are particularly impressive and add to the movie's creepy atmosphere.

One of the strengths of the movie is its cast, especially Sam Bottoms, who gives a solid performance as the hero. His character is intelligent, resourceful, and brave, which makes the audience root for him. Susanne Reed is also good as Barbara, the tough-as-nails owner of the resort who is not afraid to take matters into her own hands. Virgil Frye provides some comic relief as Hank, the eccentric boat captain who knows more about the island's secrets than he lets on.

The movie also has a score that complements the action on the screen. The music is suspenseful and eerie, and it adds to the movie's overall atmosphere. The cinematography is also well-done, capturing the beauty of the tropical island while also showcasing the monster's menacing presence.

Overall, Up From the Depths is a fun and entertaining monster movie that is perfect for a late-night viewing. It might not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it delivers on its promises of scares and thrills. If you're a fan of creature features or B-movies, then this movie is definitely worth checking out.
