Directed by Charles Barton, the movie combines action, romance, and adventure to create a thrilling drama that follows the story of a Californian wheat farmer named Clint Belmet (Randolph Scott). At the outset of the movie, Clint, a determined young farmer saddles his horse and sets out on a journey east to buy seeds for his farm. However, when he reaches his destination, he discovers that his supplier has died, leaving him without any seeds. Determined to return home with something, Clint accepts a job to lead a wagon trail through treacherous terrain in order to help a group of settlers reach the fertile land on the Californian coast.

Despite the ever-present danger, Clint forges ahead with the settlers, who must face an array of natural obstacles including steep cliffs, rivers, and deserts, where supplies are scarce, and bandits are aplenty. Along the way, Clint forms a bond with one of the settlers, Tonia (Gail Patrick), who is traveling with her younger brother, Jerry (Billy Lee). As their attraction grows, Clint must navigate his feelings for Tonia while simultaneously serving as their protector.

As they journey through the rugged landscape, things take a turn for the worse when a gang of outlaws, led by the menacing Slade (Monte Blue), ambush and rob the settlers. With everything they need to survive gone, tensions begin to rise among the group, and they start to question whether it's worth continuing the journey. However, Clint's leadership and determination to see the settlers thrive keep them going.
