The movie begins with the story of Vijay (Sunil Dutt), a young man, who returns home to his family after completing his studies overseas. He is the son of the wealthy businessman Rajan Babu (Ashok Kumar), who owns a successful textile mill. However, Vijay's return is not a happy one, as his father is disappointed with him for not graduating at the top of his class. Rajan Babu wants his son to become the best, and is unhappy with his mediocre academic results.

Meanwhile, Devendra (Sharad Kumar), Rajan Babu's trusted employee, is in love with Vijay's sister Neeta (Rekha). Despite Devendra's love for her, Neeta is not interested in him and instead falls in love with Vijay's college friend, Ashok (Ravi Sharma).
