S1 E6: Watts

In this episode of Broken Bread, host Roy Choi travels to the Watts neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Known for its history of racial tension and poverty, Watts is also a neighborhood rich in culinary traditions and resilience.

Choi begins his exploration of Watts at a community garden where he meets local activist Ron Finley. Finley has become a figurehead for urban gardening, having transformed vacant lots and neglected spaces into vibrant gardens filled with fresh produce. Together, they dig into the soil, plant seeds, and discuss the importance of having access to healthy food in under-resourced communities.

Next, Choi visits a local bakery, Cannibal, where owner and baker Jonathan Zamora shares his story of how he went from being incarcerated to becoming an entrepreneur. Zamora's passion for baking and desire to provide job opportunities for those with similar backgrounds are evident in his bakery's delicious offerings.

Choi also visits the Watts Coffee House, a neighborhood institution that has been serving the community for over 50 years. Owner Florence "Flo" White shares her story of coming to Watts in the 1950s and establishing the coffee house as a place for the community to gather and share their stories over a cup of coffee and a plate of soul food.

Throughout the episode, Choi also meets with residents and community leaders who are working to improve Watts through initiatives such as community gardens, youth mentorship programs, and mental health services. Despite the challenges the neighborhood faces, the resilience and strength of the Watts community are evident in the positive changes they are making.

Overall, this episode of Broken Bread shines a light on the rich cultural and culinary traditions of Watts, while also highlighting the important work being done by community members to create positive change.
