Ep 2. The Shadowy Sprits of Rolling Hills Asylum

In season 4 episode 2 of BuzzFeed Unsolved: Supernatural, entitled "The Shadowy Spirits of Rolling Hills Asylum," hosts Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej visit the infamous Rolling Hills Asylum in upstate New York to investigate the numerous claims of paranormal activity that have been reported on the premises.

Upon arrival, the hosts are given a brief history of the asylum, which was originally established in 1827 as a poorhouse and later converted into a hospital for the mentally ill in 1927. It operated as such until 1995, and over the course of nearly two centuries, tens of thousands of patients are estimated to have passed through its doors.

Ryan and Shane begin their investigation in the morgue, where they attempt to communicate with any spirits that may be lingering in the room. Using a device known as an ovilus, which is said to convert environmental readings into spoken words, they ask questions and listen for responses. While they don't receive any clear answers, they do notice a strange banging sound coming from one of the drawers in the morgue.

Next, the hosts venture into the underground tunnels that connect various parts of the asylum, where they hear unexplained footsteps and voices in the darkness. They also visit the "death tunnel," a narrow passage that leads from the asylum to a nearby cemetery and was reportedly used to transport deceased patients in the dead of night.

In the main building, Ryan and Shane explore the abandoned patient wards and attempt to capture EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) with the help of a digital recorder. They also use a thermal camera to search for any anomalies in temperature that could indicate the presence of a spirit. While they don't encounter any definitive evidence, they do note a number of strange occurrences, including a door that opens and closes on its own and an object that appears to move without explanation.

As the investigation draws to a close, Ryan and Shane sit down with one of Rolling Hills' former employees, who shares some of her own paranormal experiences at the asylum. She recounts seeing shadowy figures moving through the halls and hearing disembodied voices speaking in languages she didn't recognize.

In the end, while the hosts may not have found concrete proof of the supernatural at Rolling Hills Asylum, their investigation certainly leaves them with a sense of unease and a renewed appreciation for the many people who suffered within its walls.
