Death in León is a gripping true crime series produced by JWProductions that revolves around the murder investigation of Isabel Carrasco, a well-known and influential politician in León, Spain. The series follows the trail of evidence and piecing together of the events leading to her unfortunate death in broad daylight on the steps of a government building in 2014.

The series is set against the beautiful backdrop of León and follows the team of detectives who investigate the murder, as they make sense of the complex web of relationships that surrounded Isabel. As the investigation progresses, the series delves deep into the personal and professional lives of those involved in the case, revealing dark secrets, hidden agendas, and bitter rivalries. The show is a fascinating exploration of the human psyche, and the lengths that people will go to in order to achieve their goals.

The series is shot in a documentary-style format and features interviews with key players in the investigation, along with re-enactments of events and snippets of real footage from news broadcasts at the time of the murder. The use of real footage adds a sense of authenticity to the series and allows viewers to see the real-life impact that the events had on the community of León.

Death in León is impossible to pitch as a standard true crime series. It is an exploration of power, politics, and gender in Spain. Isabel was known for her combative style, both personally and professionally. She was a divisive figure in the community, known for her love of power and control. This led to her making enemies along the way. Not surprisingly, the investigation uncovers a web of lies, betrayal and political intrigue that had surrounded her for years. The show explores the extent of corruption and manipulation that had stemmed from a power structure in which women had been continually underrepresented and silenced.

JWProductions does an excellent job of presenting the investigation in a non-linear way. This pulls in the viewer, and they are able to witness from multiple perspectives the factors that ultimately contributed to Isabel's death. The characters in the series are fascinating, none more so than those that played a role in the murder. Everyone- the investigators, lawyers, journalists- have different perspectives and beliefs about what happened, and who was responsible.

The series also paints a picture of Spanish political culture. A culture that mitigates hate and competition more than actual achievements of the individual. A culture where patriarchy prevails, despite the claim of equality that the Constitution states. Where motherhood and femininity are a liability, and where lacking one's rule in society is accepted. The corruption lies at the root of everything, contributing to a society’s downfall, where morality is lost within the greed of politicians.

The show offers an in-depth look at the Spanish legal system and the relationship between the police and those in power. The trial and the investigation presented a corruption web that was incredibly complex and driven by personal ambition.

In conclusion, Death in León is a must-watch show that combines a riveting true crime story with an in-depth review of the effects of political culture. JWProductions does an excellent job of presenting the evidence in a way that keeps the viewer engaged while presenting an exploration of power struggles, gender inequality, and corruption. The series is a fascinating exploration of human nature when power, politics and the legal system get entangled, in a must-see series for fans of true crime content.
