Day three of Diesel Power Challenge 2014 brings the contestants to the 1/8 mile track for the 1/8 Mile Trailer Tow challenge. Each contestant must tow a trailer down the track as quickly as possible. The catch? The trailer is loaded with cinder blocks and weighs over 10,000 pounds.
The day starts with a safety briefing and inspection to ensure each truck is up to the task. The rules state that each truck must have a hitch rated for at least 10,000 pounds, and each driver must wear a helmet. The contestants are all nervous but eager to get started.
First up is the 2014 Ford F-350 driven by Caleb Hammons. He hooks up to the trailer and sets off down the track, the massive weight causing the truck to struggle. Despite the slow start, he manages to complete the run in just over 22 seconds.
Next is the 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 driven by Bob Petersen. His truck is equipped with air bags, which he inflates to help level out the load. It seems to do the trick, as he flies down the track with a time of just over 16 seconds.
The crowd cheers as each truck takes its turn, with some struggling more than others. One contestant's truck catches fire, but the safety team is quick to extinguish it before anyone is hurt.
As the day goes on, the contestants become increasingly competitive. Some begin to make modifications to their trucks during breaks in the action, hoping to gain an edge. The judges keep a close eye on these modifications, as they want to ensure that each truck is still within the rules.
As the sun begins to set, only two contestants remain. The tension is high as they take their turns on the track. In the end, it all comes down to fractions of a second, with one contestant edging out the other by less than a second.
As they celebrate their victories or pick themselves up from defeat, the contestants are already thinking ahead to the next challenge. They know that the competition is only going to get tougher, and they need to be ready for whatever the judges have in store. The Diesel Power Challenge is far from over, and the journey to be crowned champion is just beginning.
