Over half of the passengers had died during the voyage, and the remaining survivors were gravely ill. The ship was immediately placed under quarantine, and the passengers were taken to makeshift hospitals on shore.

The tragedy of the Carricks was a wake-up call for the Canadian government, which had been lax in enforcing quarantine regulations for ships arriving from Europe. It was clear that more needed to be done to protect the health and safety of immigrants arriving in Canada. And for the surviving passengers of the Carricks, it was a heartbreaking reminder of the risks they had taken in seeking a better life across the ocean.
