In the first episode of Megalo Box, we are introduced to a futuristic society where citizens live in a world divided into different levels of wealth and privilege. In this world, people participate in a new and popular sport called Megalo Boxing, which involves fighters wearing enhanced exoskeletons to amplify their punching power, endurance, and overall performance.
The main character, Junk Dog, is a skilled underground Megalo Boxer from the poorest part of the city who dreams of making a name for himself in the professional circuit. Together with his trainer and friend Gansaku Nanbu, he participates in illegal fights and struggles to make ends meet in the world of organized crime.
One day, Junk Dog and Nanbu encounter a wealthy businessman who challenges Junk Dog to a fight and offers him an opportunity to participate in the Megalonia tournament - a prestigious and lucrative championship for the best Megalo Boxers in the world. The catch is that Junk Dog must enter the tournament under a fake identity - a new persona called "Joe" who will fight in the official circuit with only his natural raw power, without any enhancements.
Junk Dog initially refuses the offer, feeling that it goes against his principles and the spirit of the sport. However, after a series of events that lead to him being banned from his usual fighting venues and losing his matches, he reconsiders the offer and decides to take on the challenge, hoping to prove himself and elevate his status as a fighter.
The episode ends with Joe entering the ring for the first time with his new identity, facing a formidable opponent in a professionally sanctioned bout. The fight is intense and brutal, with both opponents exchanging powerful blows and showcasing their skills. Despite being at a disadvantage, Joe shows some unexpected moves and manages to overpower his opponent in a surprising twist ending that sets up the tone for the rest of the series.
