Ep 9. Socks Are Important

In "Mr Inbetween" season 2 episode 9, titled "Socks Are Important," we continue to follow the story of Ray Shoesmith (Scott Ryan), a criminal who doubles as a loving father and friend to those around him. The episode begins with Ray and Ally (Brooke Satchwell) getting ready for a getaway to Geelong, which they believe will offer some much-needed time away from the chaos that has recently enveloped their lives.

However, as we soon see, Ray's criminal world threatens to encroach on their peaceful plans. We see snippets of his shady dealings with various underworld players, including his friend Gary (Justin Rosniak) and the dangerous Davros (David Field). At the same time, Ally is growing increasingly suspicious of Ray's true nature, and she begins to probe deeper into his past and present.

As the couple makes their way to Geelong, they encounter a seemingly friendly couple at the hotel - played by Damon Herriman and Mirrah Foulkes - who invite them to a party. Ray is reluctant, sensing danger, but Ally convinces him to attend. What follows is a strange and intense sequence that culminates in Ray and Ally getting into a fight with some of the other partygoers. Through it all, we see the fundamental differences between the two lovers: Ally is naturally good and kind, while Ray is a product of his violent and troubled past.

Later, we see Ray meeting with a former associate, who warns him of impending danger from the police. Ray is unfazed, as usual, but as he makes his way back to Ally and his daughter Brittany (Chika Yasumura), he knows that his time as a normal, everyday person is slowly coming to an end.

As always, "Mr Inbetween" delivers a nuanced and complex episode that blends elements of crime, drama, and dark humor. Scott Ryan continues to be a revelation as Ray, perfectly embodying the character's mix of toughness and vulnerability. Brooke Satchwell is also excellent as Ally, playing the character's growing unease with Ray's actions with a quiet intensity. All in all, "Socks Are Important" is a standout episode in an already impressive season.
