TechKnow Season 3 Episode 6 Gold at Any Cost

  • March 15, 2015

Gold at Any Cost, the sixth episode of season three of TechKnow, delves deep into the world of gold mining and the impact it has on the environment and human health. The episode takes us to the Amazon rainforest in Peru, where informal gold mining has caused deforestation, mercury pollution, and social conflicts.

The episode starts with host Phil Torres and his team flying over the Madre de Dios region of Peru, where they witness vast swathes of virgin rainforest turned to wasteland by gold mining. They talk to an environmental scientist who explains how the miners use mercury to extract gold from sand and gravel, and how the toxic metal seeps into the soil and rivers, causing health problems for the local communities and damaging wildlife.

To understand the scale of the problem, the TechKnow team visits a gold-mining town, where they meet with miners, shop owners, and local officials. They learn about the social conflicts arising from the competition for resources, the lack of formal employment opportunities, and the high profits in the illicit gold trade.

The team then travels upstream to see firsthand the impact of mercury pollution on aquatic life. They talk to fisherman and fishermen's wives who tell them how their catch has declined in size and quality, and how they have seen mercury poisoning in their families and neighbors.

The TechKnow team also meets with Peruvian scientists who are studying the environmental impact of gold mining and developing new technologies to reduce mercury use. They visit a laboratory where they see a mercury-free gold extraction process that uses a cyanide solution instead. The team discusses the benefits and drawbacks of this alternative method, and the challenges of scaling it up to artisanal mining operations.

The episode ends with a visit to a sustainable gold-mining operation run by a cooperative of local miners. The cooperative members explain how they use environmentally friendly methods, respect labor rights, and share the profits equally among themselves. The TechKnow team interviews the president of the cooperative, who tells them how they are trying to raise awareness of responsible mining practices and lobby for policy changes that would support small-scale miners.

Gold at Any Cost is a thought-provoking episode that sheds light on a complex issue that affects not only Peru but also many other countries where illegal and informal gold mining is rampant. The episode raises questions about the trade-offs between economic development, environmental protection, and social justice, and highlights the need for multi-stakeholder dialogue and collaboration to address the root causes of the problem.
