Al Jazeera America is a satellite and basic cable news television channel that's available in more than 61 million American households. The Al Jazeera Media Network, which receives part of its funding from Qatar's ruling family, owns the channel. It is headquartered and run from the Manhattan Center in New York City where its studios are located. Al Jazeera America has several bureaus. They are located in Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C. It's the second Al Jazeera station in the American television market. The first was beIN Sport.

Although the network is new to the American market, it is able to fiercely compete with CNN, Fox News Channel, HLN, and MSNBC because most of its senior staff is American television veterans. The network's president is Kate O'Brian, former ABC News vice president. Ehab Al Shihabi is CEO and handles business affairs. David Doss formally of CNN is New Programming vice president, Marcy McGinnis, a former CBS News executive is vice president of News Gathering, and Shannon High-Bassalik, formally an executive with MSNBC is the senior vice president in charge of Documentaries and Programs.

Most of the network's programming originates in the U.S. It broadcasts primarily domestic news and important global stories not available on other networks. America Tonight, a weeknight news magazine presenting news of the day, is Al Jazeera America's flagship nighttime show. In its just over 18 months in operation, Al Jazeera America has won numerous awards.
