The show Weird City, created by Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders, is a science-fiction anthology series that takes place in a futuristic city called Weird. Each episode focuses on different characters as they navigate their unique and often bizarre experiences in this society that is divided into two classes - Above the Line and Below the Line.
In the premiere episode titled "The One," we are introduced to Stu (Dylan O'Brien), a young man living in the Below the Line section of Weird City. Stu is an average joe, living a mundane life and searching for love like most people do. However, in this society, finding true love depends on a computer program that matches people based on their DNA. Stu decides to give it a try, but he quickly learns that the love of his life may not be who he expected.
Throughout the episode, we see Stu go on a series of awkward dates that are predetermined by the dating app. He meets women who are not what he expected, but who all have one thing in common - they share the same genetic marker with him. Stu becomes obsessed with finding the perfect match, believing that she will complete him and solve all of his problems.
Meanwhile, we are introduced to the world of Above the Line through the character of Michelle (Rosario Dawson). Michelle is a successful scientist who is developing a new technology that will change the way people see the world. However, she quickly realizes that her work is being used for ethical and social manipulation by the ruling class. Michelle questions the morality of her work and her place in society, leading to a clash with her superior, Dr. Negari (LeVar Burton).
As Stu's quest for love becomes more desperate, he discovers that the dating app's algorithm is flawed and that the perfect match he has been searching for may not exist. He becomes disillusioned with the idea of love and the society that created this false hope. Michelle, on the other hand, stands up to the corrupt system and decides to take action to make a change.
"The One" sets the tone for the series, exploring the themes of love, social inequality, and the consequences of technology. It is a clever and satirical take on the future of society and how the advancements in technology can shape our lives in unexpected ways. The episode ends with a twist that sets up the rest of the season, leaving viewers eager to see where the show will take us next.
