WWE Pay-Per-View Season 20 Episode 9 Summerslam 2004
- August 15, 2004
The nineteenth annual Summerslam pay-per-view event from the WWE aired in 2004. Taking place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto Ontario, Canada, the event featured a stacked card with some of the biggest stars in professional wrestling at the time.
The main event of Summerslam 2004 saw Randy Orton challenging Chris Benoit for the World Heavyweight Championship. Orton had been on a roll leading up to the match, winning the Intercontinental Championship and defeating other top stars such as Shawn Michaels, Edge, and Mick Foley. However, Benoit was no slouch himself, having won the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania XX earlier in the year by defeating Triple H and Shawn Michaels.
In what turned out to be a hard-fought and incredibly physical match, both men left everything in the ring. Orton used his quickness and agility to try and keep Benoit off balance, but the Rabid Wolverine kept coming back with his powerful strikes and suplexes. The match came to a shocking conclusion when Orton hit an RKO out of nowhere on Benoit, seemingly securing the victory. However, guest referee Eugene (a character played by WWE wrestler Nick Dinsmore) had been knocked out earlier in the match and was unable to make the count. This allowed Benoit to recover and hit Orton with his patented diving headbutt, securing the pinfall victory and retaining his World Heavyweight Championship.
Another high-profile match at Summerslam 2004 saw Kurt Angle taking on Eddie Guerrero in a battle of technical wrestling prowess. Both men were former WWE Champions and had a long-standing rivalry that dated back to their time in WWE's developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling. The match saw lots of back-and-forth action, as both competitors jockeyed for position with various holds and maneuvers. Eventually, Guerrero was able to hit his signature frog splash and score the pinfall victory over Angle.
In addition to these matches, Summerslam 2004 featured several other memorable bouts. The Undertaker took on JBL in a hardcore match for the WWE Championship, with the stipulation that if Taker lost he would have to retire. Despite JBL's best efforts to use weapons such as his trademark steel chair, Undertaker fought back and was able to hit a Tombstone Piledriver for the victory, ending JBL's lengthy reign as champion.
The tag team division was also on full display at Summerslam 2004, with a match for the WWE Tag Team Championships pitting The Dudley Boyz against Rey Mysterio and Rob Van Dam. The high-flying duo of Mysterio and Van Dam were able to outlast the veteran Dudley Boyz, hitting several high-risk moves to secure the win and become the new tag team champions.
Other notable matches at the event included a Divas Dodgeball game and a match between Kane and Matt Hardy.
Overall, Summerslam 2004 was a memorable event that showcased some of the biggest stars in professional wrestling at the time. With a mix of technical wrestling, high-flying action, and hardcore brawling, it was a great example of what the WWE had to offer at the height of the Ruthless Aggression era.
